project goal: pick a design style, and redesign a product for any brand in your chosen style.

personal project - fall 2021

I chose to redesign Pacifica’s makeup compact. Pacifica is a vegan youth-focused cosmetic company. I chose Pacifica because I was drawn to their current place in the market as an approachable but creative and almost dreamy design aesthetic. I felt there was an opportunity to bring a vintage aesthetic to Pacifica’s collection.

Makeup compacts first came into production in the 1920s. Compacts used to be a thing of beauty, a piece of art, decorated and adorned with fine metals and stones. Compacts were cherished by women, used more than once, refilled and cared for.

Once I decided the direction of my project, I moved into sketch ideation. My forms were directly inspired by vintage compact design as well as art movements that have influenced fashion and makeup trends. I combined details from my top sketch concepts and moved into 3D modeling to explore the ergonomics of each compact.

3D printing my top concepts also gave me the opportunity to study the tactile details I engraved on each case. I brought the prototypes together with pieces from my own antique beauty collection to visualize how these compacts would compare against authentic vintage pieces.

Three Artistic Directions

Each compact case is designed to evoke a unique art style that still remain cohesive as a collection. Each pattern that I chose to engrave on each case was chosen based on that pattern’s respective art movement, such as art deco or art nouveau. By bringing a vintage artistry to each case, this highlights the long-term quality and reusable nature of the design. Once I was pleased with the 3D compact prototypes, I moved into rendering as well as building the personality and presence of this faux collection.

How It Works - The first step is to select your tone ✨ We have warm and cool skin tone guides online as well as in-store to help you make the perfect match! After selecting your tone, choose which case you’d like to use! Once you have selected a case, you can insert the pan and you are good to go! Looking good, as always 💅

Our cases are designed to be long-lasting. Each case is made out of gold-plated metal that won’t tarnish over time. When you run out of powder, simply remove and recycle the tin pan and pop in a refill!

Order refills from pacificabeauty.com, so you can keep using your case for years to come! ✨

Secondary Packaging

It was a purposeful choice to design the cases as an homage to vintage compacts of the 1950s, but I was looking for a way to bring Pacifica’s engaging and playful branding into the project. I decided to blend old and new – a mixture of vintage pop art, dreamy colors, and snappy, confident women.

Packaging modeled in Fusion 360. Rendered in Keyshot10. Illustrations are not mine; created by using a combination of stock pop art found online and photobashed comic panels.
